One Billion Points Streamed in AR

Massive scans. Mobile headsets. No compromise in detail — thanks to Hololight Stream.

Ship retrofits require engineering precision — but most vessels lack digital design data. To capture as-built geometry, ShipReality 3D-scans entire ships and merges the scans with complex CAD designs.
The challenge: how to visualize these massive point clouds in augmented reality on mobile devices?

The solution: Hololight Stream.

By integrating Hololight’s XR streaming technology, ShipReality can now stream ultra-detailed 3D scans — over one billion points — to AR devices like HoloLens 2. Even layered with CAD retrofit data, the models remain fluid and interactive.

“We integrated the Hololight Stream into our solution to stream large 3D laser scans merged with CAD retrofit designs to a HoloLens 2.”
Georgios Bourtzos, CEO and Co-Founder of ShipReality

Instead of relying on local processing, Hololight Stream offloads rendering to external servers and streams encrypted image data to mobile devices. That means full-scale scans and high-detail 3D models can be explored in real-time — no crashes, no compromises.

ShipReality is now able to visualize ship models that are only suited for high-performance processing, capture large assets 1:1, and integrate complex 3D CAD data for spatial analytics in AR. The result: faster workflows and fewer processing steps.

“Hololight Stream can save us a lot of time and resources because we can directly use point clouds in mobile AR: some pre-processing steps can be avoided. To realize the full potential of immersive point cloud experiences, streaming will play a major role.”
