City of Munich Uses AR for Urban Planning

Table of Contents

The soon-to-be district Freiham in Munich is being presented vividly and interactively with an Augmented Reality Construction Plan from Hololight. This application visualizes the entire construction plan of Munich’s rising quarter in 3D: on a table or in life-size. Users can play with the implemented “What if” scenarios .

Based on digital 3D data, Hololight visualized and virtually modelled the future development in the new Munich district of Freiham. The photorealistic 3D city model along with the 3D district plan are virtually displayed in room size (RoomScale). Apart from the meeting room, it also works at the envisaged destination.

The Future is close

With the help of the WorldScale mode it is possible to augment the real world on site with virtual 3D data of future buildings. In this way, viewers can gain an impression of the dimensions of the planned buildings and play through possible “what if” scenarios. For example: What will the new district look like if the buildings are built one floor higher?

Luis Bollinger, CMO & Co-Founder Hololight: “With this project we won the innovation competition of the city of Munich in 2018. Within the framework of the competition, the City of Munich is looking for proposals for solutions to current municipal challenges and offers the opportunity to tackle real problems.”

In addition to features that make it possible to display street names and move or scale buildings, other options can also be added, such as the display of public transportation stops, bicycle parking spaces, and the current concentration of particulate matter in the form of a heat map. Through the cooperation of Hololight and the geodata services of the City of Munich, a 3D twin of the district has already been created and can now be continuously expanded with these and other features.

While the Room Scale mode works best for meeting scenarios and is also particularly well-suited to the detailed planning of construction. Furthermore the World Scale mode offers not only the opportunity to visualize development plans on site, but also takes the citizens of Munich by the hand to playfully and innovatively introduce them to new neighborhoods.
