The State of Enterprise VR in 2026

The State of Enterprise VR in 2026
10:31

The VR market is forecast to reach $164.5 billion in 20261. Yet Meta's Quest headset shipments fell 42.3% in 2025 while total XR shipments grew 44.4%2, and Meta stopped selling commercial Quest headsets in February 2026. That tension defines the state of VR in 2026: a large, fast-growing market resting on hardware that is reorganizing faster than most deployment plans assume.

VR no longer sits in a category of its own. Buyers evaluating it for design review or training are choosing between VR headsets, passthrough mixed reality and see-through AR glasses for the same work, and the shipment data covers all three. This article uses VR for headset-based immersive work and XR where the figures or the deployments span the wider device set.

This article covers:

  • ■  The State of VR in 2026 at a Glance
  • ■  How the Enterprise Device Landscape Shifted
  • ■  Where Enterprise XR Is Working: Adoption and Reported Outcomes
  • ■  Where Enterprise VR Programs Stall
  • ■  What Scalable Enterprise VR Infrastructure Requires

The State of VR in 2026 at a Glance

The table below pairs the market's scale with the device trends that shape what enterprise buyers can actually deploy.

The State of VR in 2026: Scale and Device Mix

Measure Figure Scope Source
Global VR market, 2026 (estimate) $164.5B All VR segments, consumer included Grand View Research1
Global VR market, 2033 (forecast) $901.2B, 27.5% CAGR (2026 to 2033) All VR segments, consumer included Grand View Research1
Mixed reality headset shipments 3.2M in 2026 to 10.4M in 2030 (34.4% unit CAGR) Passthrough headsets such as Meta Quest and PICO IDC3,4
Optical see-through display glasses shipments 3.0M in 2026 to 12.2M in 2030 (41.9% unit CAGR) Tethered display glasses that project a virtual screen from a phone or laptop IDC4
Display-less smart glasses shipments, Q1 2026 2.25M units, up 167% year over year Camera and audio eyewear, led by Meta (69.2% share) IDC3

Two readings matter for enterprise buyers. First, the headline number is not an enterprise number. Grand View's $164.5 billion spans hardware, software and consumer applications, and Asia Pacific alone accounts for more than 40% of revenue, so it measures the size of the ecosystem enterprise programs draw on, not enterprise demand itself1.

Second, growth is uneven by device. Meta's Quest line fell 42.3% in 2025 while total XR shipments grew 44.4%, so IDC's 34.4% annual growth forecast for mixed reality starts from a weakened base2,4. Volume is concentrated in eyewear: display-less glasses are the largest category by units, with IDC forecasting 13.6 million in 2026, and optical see-through display glasses have the fastest growth rate of the three device categories above3,4. For an enterprise VR program, the hardware market is reorganizing around form factors that most current deployments were not designed for. For the wider XR picture, see XR Market Size & Growth.

How the Enterprise Device Landscape Shifted

The forecasts above are projections. The vendor decisions below reflect changes that have already happened, and they show how quickly the ground can move under a fleet.

Enterprise Device Landscape: What Changed

Vendor What changed Date Source
Microsoft HoloLens 2 production ended, with security updates continuing through December 31, 2027 and no successor announced. Confirmed October 2024 UploadVR5
Meta Ended sales of commercial Quest headsets and Horizon managed services on February 20, 2026. Existing managed-service customers keep access through January 4, 2030. Consumer Quest headsets remain on sale. February 2026 The Register6; TechRadar7
Apple Vision Pro received an M5 refresh at $3,499. Reports since describe reduced production and marketing. October 2025 to April 2026 Hololight8; Tom's Guide9
Snap Specs AR glasses opened for pre-order at $2,195 in the US, UK and France, with shipping from fall 2026. At the September 16 launch event, Snap named five enterprise software partners: Salesforce, AWS, NVIDIA, Trifork and Hololight. June to September 2026 Snap10; Hololight11

A fleet built around one vendor's roadmap inherits every change to that roadmap. HoloLens 2 users now have a fixed support end date, Meta's commercial buyers need a new procurement path, and Vision Pro buyers face reports of cutbacks. Choosing hardware still matters, and Hololight's guide to the best enterprise VR headsets in 2026 compares the current options. The more durable decision sits beneath the device, in the layer that keeps applications running when the hardware changes.

Where Enterprise VR and AR Are Working: Adoption and Reported Outcomes

Adoption is not uneven by accident. The table below maps six enterprise use cases by current adoption stage and the industries leading each.

Enterprise XR Adoption by Use Case and Device Class: 2026

Use case Adoption stage Leading industries Typical device class
Workforce training and simulation Active deployment, scaling Defense, healthcare, manufacturing, energy VR headsets
Design review and engineering visualization Active deployment Automotive, aerospace, shipbuilding VR headsets and AR glasses
Remote collaboration Early to mid stage Multi-site enterprises, professional services VR headsets and AR glasses
Maintenance and field support Early to mid stage Energy, utilities, manufacturing AR and see-through glasses
Digital twin integration Early stage Automotive, manufacturing, AEC VR headsets and AR glasses
Mission planning and simulation Expanding rapidly Defense, aerospace VR headsets

Adoption stages, leading industries and device classes above are Hololight's own assessment of enterprise deployment patterns.

Digital twin work is still early, and mission planning is expanding quickly in defense, where the data question comes first. Design review, one of the two most mature use cases, is where organizations report the most specific results.

What Organizations Report: Time and Cost

The results below are reported by the organizations involved, all of which run Hololight deployments. They have not been independently audited, and each measures something different.

Reported Enterprise XR Outcomes

Organization Use case Reported result Type of result
Genesis Design Studio VR design review of Autodesk VRED models Design reviews cut from about 40 hours to 25, and $10,000 to $50,000 saved per project12 Time and cost
BMW Group AR design validation at the Munich pilot plant Up to 12 months saved per development cycle, with far fewer physical test setups13 Time
LNS Group AR design reviews and remote risk assessment $5,000 to $10,000 saved per prototype; 3 to 6 months saved14 Time and cost

Genesis Design Studio's result comes from VR design review: a review that once took about 40 hours now takes 25, and the studio reports $10,000 to $50,000 saved per project by cutting physical prototypes. BMW's result is time saved by avoiding physical test setups, and LNS's is cost and time saved by avoiding prototypes, both in AR design validation. For training outcomes from controlled studies, including PwC's, see VR Training Statistics 2026.

Where Enterprise VR Programs Stall

Programs that don't move beyond the pilot stage often stall for infrastructure reasons rather than because the headset failed.

Barriers to Scaling Enterprise VR and What Resolves Them

Barrier How it stalls programs What resolves it
Cost at scale 41% of 800 CIOs surveyed in 2024 named total cost of ownership, including content development, IT support and device refresh cycles, as the primary barrier to scaling VR beyond pilot15 Costs that grow with fleet size (per-device builds, updates, support) give way to a shared server investment when the application runs once on central infrastructure
Sensitive data on shared or mobile devices Application data stored on a headset sits outside the customer's controlled infrastructure, and buyers with strict data governance requirements often cannot accept that at all Pixel streaming: the application and its data stay on the customer's infrastructure, and only rendered pixels reach the headset
Hardware churn Applications built for one headset must be rebuilt for the next, and vendors are exiting: HoloLens 2 production has ended and Meta stopped selling commercial Quest headsets in February 20265,6 One application streamed to supported headsets, so a hardware change does not require a rebuild
Standalone compute ceiling Full-polygon industrial CAD models exceed what standalone headsets can render, forcing teams to simplify models or accept a fidelity ceiling Rendering on server or workstation GPUs rather than on the headset
Network and latency at production scale The GSMA's cloud AR/VR white paper sets the common VR target at under 20 ms between a head movement and the updated image, and says cloud VR is highly sensitive to network latency16 Streaming tuned for latency, deployed on a network designed for it

Read together, most of these barriers sit below the headset: a better device does not solve them on its own. Data location, hardware churn, compute limits and network demands are properties of how a program is deployed.

What Scalable Enterprise VR Infrastructure Requires

Hololight is the only complete proprietary enterprise XR streaming infrastructure stack on the market. Hololight's XR pixel streaming technology and its central management platform are built in-house, optimized for NVIDIA RTX GPUs, and developed independently of NVIDIA CloudXR or any third-party streaming engine.

With Hololight Stream, the application runs on servers, workstations or cloud infrastructure the customer controls, and only rendered pixels reach the headset. The headset works as a display, and nothing remains on it when the connection ends. Hololight maintains that posture as it already stands, rather than replacing existing controls or adding new ones, and application data does not reach a device outside them. Hololight Hub is the management layer above it, covering application deployment, user access, device management, session monitoring and updates from one interface, on premise or in the cloud.

Autodesk VRED workflows, custom Unity and Unreal Engine builds and other OpenXR-compatible applications can all be streamed to supported headsets, so a change in hardware does not mean a rebuild. Hololight deploys on premise, in the cloud or in fully air-gapped environments.

Named customers include BMW Group, BASF and Bilfinger. BMW uses Hololight at its Munich pilot plant for full-scale CAD validation. Hololight's XR pixel streaming technology is also part of Lockheed Martin Skunk Works' 5G Pixel Streaming Kit for defense sustainment work, through an ongoing collaboration17. FAQ

Schedule a Demo with Hololight

The state of VR in 2026 is a growing market whose hardware keeps changing. Forecasts point up and reported outcomes are concrete, but no single device is safe to assume. What a program can control is the layer beneath the headset: where data lives, where rendering happens, and how a fleet is managed across sites and hardware generations. Hololight's pixel streaming technology and Hololight Hub handle those requirements with your own applications.
