XR Streaming for Oculus Quest 2

Table of Contents

Hololight Stream is available now for Oculus Quest 2

The streaming solution for AR and VR apps combines performance and graphics power with wireless mobility. Hololight Stream works on-premises or via cloud. A cross-platform approach accelerates app development. And last but not least: a free trial of the Beta version is available now on Github.

One major disadvantage of standalone VR technology: tight performance limits. Consequently, far less impressive renderings are delivered than the ones we are actually used to from modern PCs. Hololight Stream breaks these boundaries and outsources demanding work processes such as application logic or content rendering to the cloud or a powerful local server. This way Hololight Stream enables visualization and interaction with highly polygonal, data-intensive content such as 3D objects, 3D CAD models or BIM data. CPU and GPU of the end device are only required to a small extent, which in the long term will help to reduce the size of the end devices and optimize their form factor.

How does it work?

Hololight Stream can be integrated into a Unity app in form of a plugin. This enables the VR app to be executed on a remote computer such as a local server or the cloud. Thus, the app gets streamed to Oculus Quest 2. A corresponding client application runs on the XR device and receives the image stream. The connection between the client application and the server application enables real-time streaming of XR content. Currently Hololight Stream empowers use cases such as realistic visualization in design cases, simulations or trainings.

A current requirement is that the VR app needs to be based on the MRTK toolkit. However, SteamVR is planned to be supported still this year. To date, Hololight Stream supports HoloLens 2 and Android in addition to Oculus Qest 2.

Cross-Platform Approach and Data-Security

Want to make your HoloLens 2 app available for Oculus Quest 2? A device-agnostic approach through deployed client applications reduces the development effort for XR applications. New apps can be developed simpler and without limits and restrictions of individual end devices by just building a server application. Another advantage of Hololight Stream is higher data security. Compared to other solutions, you can decide, whether the app should be streamed via cloud or on-premises. Since data is merely streamed and not stored on the mobile device, critical data is protected.

Let’s Test It
