How BMW Group Speeds Up Prototyping with Augmented Reality

How BMW Group Speeds Up Prototyping with Augmented Reality

Time Savings of up to One Year

Fewer test setups. Faster validation. Up to one year saved in development — with Hololight Space and Hololight Stream.

Vehicle prototyping is time-critical. Delays can impact production, design, and cost. Evaluating complex modules and assembly steps early is key — but difficult without physical prototypes.

The solution: Hololight Space.

At the BMW Group’s Munich pilot plant, engineers use Hololight Space on Microsoft HoloLens 2 to validate concepts and assembly processes in augmented reality. True-to-scale 3D CAD models are overlaid onto real structures and can be explored in context — reducing iterations and enabling faster decisions.
Multi-user sessions allow teams to collaborate across locations and identify issues even earlier.

“The AR goggles and CAD data allow us to find out much faster, whether the production worker will be able to fit the component properly later on, in series production. That way, we need far fewer test setups.”
Michael Schneider, Head of Complete Vehicle at the BMW Pilot Plant Munich

Thanks to Hololight Stream, the entire application runs on secure local servers. Only encrypted image data is transmitted — the CAD data stays within BMW’s infrastructure.

“Another key advantage is that it saves us time and money when we integrate new vehicles into production.”
Christoph Leibetseder, Head of Digitalization, Prototyping and Measurement Technologies at the BMW Pilot Plant Munich

With Hololight Space, BMW accelerates development, minimizes physical effort, and streamlines the path from concept to production.
